What's happening?
The City of Olympia is proposing zoning code amendments for housing. This is directly related to amendments to the Growth Management Act, which contain specific requirements for cities to implement for a variety of “middle” housing types. Related amendments also include Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and Co-Living Housing.
The first draft is issued for public review and comment – and we want to hear from you! Some parts of the proposal are required in order to meet state law but in other parts there is more discretion. We’re soliciting feedback on the parts of the proposal where there is more than one way to decide how to move forward.

This survey is one of several ways the City seeks to gather public comment and feedback on proposed code amendments to address new housing requirements in state law. It is not intended to be a statistically valid survey on this subject. If you have additional comments please submit them to middle@ci.olympia.wa.us(External link).
This survey is meant for people who have read the Draft Middle Housing Code, Accessory Dwelling Unit and Co-Living Housing Code Amendments. The draft is available online at olympiawa.gov/middlehousing(External link). Most of the proposed revisions are necessary to address new requirements in state law. To identify the main issues in the draft, where local policy choices were made in developing it, please see Policy Decision Points used in Draft(External link).
Please note that while additional housing types and units may be allowed, it will be up to each applicant to demonstrate that the proposal will fit on the lot and meet requirements for things like setbacks, lot coverage, and parking.
